  Erica Southworth, 1990

Here was my niece at 16, who was surely a beautiful young girl. This photo has puzzled people, because it appears so painterly. The answer is in the background, which is a landscape painting hanging in my studio. I still have the dress, which added a fortuitous Victorian touch to the composition. I often prefer photographs where the subject shows a certain seriousness, and I seldom if ever tell anyone to smile.

Mark and Cune, 1991

One night I saw Mark in a black tee shirt sitting on a black leather sofa. With his fair skin and dark hair it was so striking an image that I asked if I might come back the next day and photograph him. The cat's entrance into the picture was a stroke of luck - though it is saying a lot for the man that he had such rapport with that very shy creature. I consider this to be among my best compositions.
