  Liberty, 1994
Oil on linen, 30" x 26"

I did this version of the Statue of Liberty on commission. A young lawyer I knew wanted a new picture of her for his collection, and I struggled to come up with something different. Finally, I thought it would be entertaining to see what she would look like as a real person. Rather formidable, I think!

Roger, 1991
Watercolor construction, 24" x 19"

This picture is an example of mixed media, being both watercolor and collage. Roger Wetherholt's face and shirt are painted. But his tie (also painted) is attached separately, his watch is gold-leafed onto the surface of the paper, and the marbleized background is inserted behind the painted face and shirt. Roger was a slick art dealer from Washington, D.C. Again, my brush shows insights my mind did not consciously have. In life I took Roger at face value and believed in all the wonderful things he said he was going to do for me and other artists. But in my picture you see the flowers on his tie are puffed up. His face is closed, his mouth ungenerous. The gold watch suggests a certain vanity. And around him is a swirling of energy, not unlike chaos. And yet, to his eternal credit this dealer gave me a portrait show in his D.C. gallery. And because of that opportunity I grew in ways I could not have predicted, and some of my most important pieces came into being.
