| Linda
Southworth was born in Wisconsin. In 1958, when she
was 7, her family moved to Long Island, New York. She
grew up on the North Shore - first in Port Washington,
and later in Huntington.
From her early years the process of making images
with her hands has been an intimate part of her life.
She had her first memorable artistic experiences at
age 4, and begged her parents for private art lessons
when she was 10. When Linda entered St. John's University
in Queens in 1970, she declared art her major, even
though at that time - having enjoyed some success
in student theater - she was considering the idea
of an acting career.
After graduating with a B.F.A. in 1974, Linda went
to live in San Francisco. In time she returned to
New York to resume her studies at Pratt Institute
in Brooklyn, where in 1978 she earned her M.F.A. in
printmaking. While continuing her work as a printmaker,
she has explored other media - notably watercolor,
oil, collage, and photography. She is also a published
poet.
Linda Southworth has had numerous shows in the U.S.,
and her work is collected world-wide. From 1985 -
1994 she was an adjunct professor of art history at
St. Francis College in Brooklyn, and from 1993 - 1995
she worked as an art critic for the Resident Publications
in New York. She was asked to submit her bio to Who's
Who in America in 1995, and in 1998 was elected
to membership at The
Pen and Brush. |
