Queen of Diamonds, 1993
Watercolor, 15 1/2" x 16 1/2"

Here is the nude as harlequin - a mysterious picture with a Venetian flavor. Where is she? What does she look like beneath the mask? And why does she give her attention to this comical face on a pole?

Spellbound, 1990
Watercolor, 21 1/2" x 14 1/2"

I remember being at the Society of Illustrators one night and Aviva - a well-known artists' model - struck this pose while wearing a witches hat. What a breathtakingly supercilious attitude she has - all in good fun, of course. I told myself that if I got nothing else down on paper I would get this. And I did. In doing the painting from that drawing, I created the room around her and transcended the cliché of the black cat by cutting it in two. If you look closely at the wallpaper you may see hidden among the flowers - what? Why, bats of course. [See detail in next page]
